A flash-fiction I did in school. Enjoy.
Changes In The Night
The room was so dark even the shine of the moon that came in through the window could not penetrate it. He stumbles around as if his feet were weighted down and there was no way of getting them to lift high enough so he would not trip over himself. With a heavy sigh, Jeddy clumsily sits down upon the bed, were his girl lies sleeping quietly. He grimaces as his gaze slide over to the clock that glowed green upon the nightstand. It flashes with angry numbers. It was just about three in the morning and he was just getting home from being out with the boys.
Only if Cira knew what he was doing, she would kill him. Just absolutely kill him and as if sensing his clumsy presence in the room, she stirs from her rest.
“Mmmmm is that you babe?” She says in her sleepy voice.
Jeddy cringes and sighs, “Yeah, it’s me. Go back to sleep sexy,” he says gently.
Cira tenses on the bed and sits up a little, feeling suddenly more awake now. “What have you been doing? Why are you coming in so late?”
With a deep sigh, he says, “I had to work…late,” he lies through his teeth. He knew she knew. He cringes again. He never used to lie to her. Hell he never would even think of laying a harmful hand upon her and he had done it. The bruise was still there on her cheek, glaring up at him with an accusing sensation. She covers it up during the day but even then, he knew where it was and even after it would fade, he would remember it.
“Tell me the truth,” she says quietly after a moment. She could smell the beer that clung to his clothing. There was no mistaking that horrible odor. Her gaze watches him with careful eyes.
Jeddy sighs heavily once more. He thought of keeping up the lie but as he let it roll around through his head, the lie didn’t really fit. He had been fired two days ago. “I went…out…with the guys,” he finally says with a deep regret and guilt in his voice.
Cira felt the anger swell and fill her but before she could tell him to sleep on the couch, he spoke up again.
“I’m going to stop hanging with them. I’m going to stop drinking,” he nods firmly, though it was more like a bobble head bouncing up and down with his drunken state. “I’m also going to go to some meetings and everything to help stop, “he adds as he looks toward her. He gently brushes his fingers over the dark bruise upon her cheek. “I…don’t ever want to hurt you…again. Ever,” he mutters quietly.
Cira felt tears entering her eyes. She nods slightly to him, gently taking his hand into hers. “Alright, We’ll get through this.”
He smiles and nods slowly, his arms soon circling about her slender waist and pulling her to him. He holds her like that for what felt like ages, till he lays her down and cuddled with her in the silent night that seemed suddenly different. Not so heavy.
